The Southern Aurora - a 1960s icon of the nation

The gleaming, stainless steel Southern Aurora® pioneered luxury overnight rail travel on the Sydney - Melbourne standard gauge rail line in the 60s. Now, restored to its former splendour, the Southern Aurora's elegant and comfortable Lounge / Bar and Restaurant Carriages are reawakening the romance of rail.

Retreat to our cosy wood panelled Edwardian sitting cars for some First Class style – priceless antiques from the age of master craftsmen. Elegant carriage 'GMS 1' provides comfortable lounge seating and a sizeable open-air end balcony from which to watch the world go by.

Edwardian cars and 'GMS 1' now feature on most Southern Aurora Restaurant Train departures – adding to the existing comfort and style of the Southern Aurora Restaurant and Lounge / Bar Cars.
